Quinebaug Rail Trail sign to be unveiled

July 10, 2006 – The Quinebaug Rail Trail Advisory Committee and the Grand Trunk Trailblazers will unveil a new sign marking the Quinebaug Rail Trail on Saturday, July 15, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. (Rain date is Sunday same time and place.) The ceremony will take place along the trail next to the Casaubon Senior Center in Southbridge, according to Senator Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge) Advisory Committee chairman.

The Quinebaug Rail Trail is being developed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts along the former Providence and Worcester Railroad right of way through Southbridge, Dudley and Webster. The right of way was purchased by the state two years ago at a cost of $1.3 million through the efforts of Senator Moore and Reps. Mark Carron (D-Southbridge) and Paul Kujawski (D-Webster).

In a recent supplemental budget, the Legislature authorized $200,000 to begin preliminary design of the trail. Trail projects such as this one serve as a recreational facility for area towns as well as an economic development catalyst for small businesses located near the trail for refreshments, bike rentals, etc.

The new trail sign, provided by the Grand Trunk Trailblazers, was constructed by students from the Bay Path Regional Vocational High School, and is intended to alert to the public to the future development of the trail and to build public support for the trail project.
