August 1, 2006 - Swimming in Hopedale Pond? With a heat wave settling over much of the state, Senator Moore and Representative Marie J. Parente (D-Milford) took bold steps this week to see that this activity was once again a reality.
With the cooperation of the Hopedale town officials, Moore and Parente secured $250,000 to begin planning for the restoration of Hopedale Pond.
“I am pleased that Rep Parente and I were able to secure these important funds,” said Moore. “In its hay day, Hopedale Pond drew people to its banks from all over the region. It was a recreational and economic center for the community and we look forward to residents once again taking advantage of this valuable community resource.”
The $250,000 will be used to develop a management plan for the restoration and maintenance of Hopedale Pond along the Mill River. The pond and its surrounding parklands is one of the most beautiful and heavily utilized recreational areas in the southern Worcester County.
“It’s a great day for Hopedale,” said Representative Parente. “Any time we can restore one of nature’s waterways, it’s a day to celebrate. This appropriation is especially significant because so many other Blackstone Valley towns along the Mill River will also benefit.”
The pond restoration is part of a broader redevelopment effort for downtown Hopedale. Senator Moore and Representative Parente have also been meeting regularly with Hopedale’s Draper Re-Use Committee and Mr. Philip Shwachman, owner of the former Rockwell/Draper property, to discuss current safety issues and future plans for the facility.
