Toxic Use Reduction grants available to towns, local groups

August 9, 2006 – The Toxics Use Reduction Institute (TURI) UMass Lowell is seeking proposals from non-profit or environmental organizations, municipal departments, or agencies in the state, according to Senator Moore.

“The grants provided by TURI will help communities and organizations reduce toxic chemical use to promote a healthier work place and neighborhood,” said Senator Moore. “I encourage towns and local groups to apply for these grants to improve working conditions in businesses and benefit the lives of residents.”

Now in its 12th year, the goal of the TURI grant program is to help organizations raise awareness of the hazards of toxic chemical use and introduce safer alternatives within their neighborhoods.

Neighborhood associations, labor unions, fire and police departments, civic organizations, chambers of commerce, libraries, boards of health, hospitals, health centers and public schools--all are encouraged to apply.

The deadline to submit proposals for consideration and all supporting material is August 30, 2006. TURI will award the grants at a maximum of $12,500 each.

Toxics Use Reduction Institute at UMass Lowell provides the resources and tools to help Massachusetts companies and communities make the Commonwealth a safer place to live and work. Established by the State’s Toxics Use Reduction Act of 1989, TURI provides research, training, technical support, laboratory testing services and grant programs to reduce the use of toxic chemicals while enhancing the economic competitiveness of businesses.
