Bellingham receives Smart Growth Grants

November 6, 2006... The town of Bellingham has been awarded a $29,830 this fiscal year from the Smart Growth Technical Assistance Grant Program administered by the Executive Office of Environmental Affairs according to Senator Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge) and Representative Jennifer M. Callahan (D-Sutton). The grant is part of $896,383 in assistance awarded to 50 communities across the state.

“This critical funding will address the town’s vision to develop Pulaski Boulevard and Crooks Corner,” said Moore. “Since this year’s grant application was extremely competitive, I am especially pleased that the state supported Bellingham’s plan to increase the quality of life for its citizens and spur economic growth in the area.”

Representative Callahan joined in applauding the town’s efforts and dedication to economic development. “Bellingham has demonstrated keen vision in planning for its future by seeking this important technical assistance,” said Callahan. “I congratulate the town in being smart about smart growth.”

The grant proposal submitted by the town planning board was part of 75 applications from 104 communities. This project will transform the area of Pulaski Boulevard and Crooks Corner to the Village District which will benefit the community in the future.

“The Planning Board wants to thank the town’s Legislative delegation for this grant. Without their support, the fund would not have been realized,” said Denis Fraine, Town Administrator.

The smart growth grant program provides up to $30,000 per community to implement smart growth zoning changes and undertake other activities that will improve sustainable development practices locally.
