Blackstone Valley communities selected for regional Heritage Landscape survey
December 20, 2006...The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), John H. Chafee Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor Commission and Quinebaug-Shetucket Heritage Corridor, Inc. informed Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge that nine towns in his district have been chosen to participate in DCR’s Heritage Landscape Inventory Program. The program is part of DCR’s Historic Landscape Preservation Initiative, which sponsors special initiatives and offers technical assistance and training to support the preservation of historically significant landscapes throughout the state. “The amazing landscape that creates the Blackstone Valley is truly what makes this region so special,” said Moore. “It is wonderful to see the state and local groups work together on a program that will preserve the historical character of this beautiful region.” The Heritage Landscape Inventory Program provides direct technical assistance to help communities identify, document and protect the heritage landscapes that are vital to the history, character and quality of life in the region. Participating communities that have been selected include: Douglas, Dudley, Hopedale, Mendon, Millville, Northbridge, Oxford, Sutton and Uxbridge. “The Heritage Landscape Inventory program provides a great opportunity for communities to identify not only their heritage landscapes but also the tools that can be used to help protect them,” said Commissioner Stephen H. Burrington of the DCR. “Through this initiative, DCR and the heritage corridors will be able to provide these communities and our regional partners with critical information to assist in their smart growth planning efforts and help to protect distinctive places and spaces that define the character of the communities in this region.” DCR has worked with 67 communities to date throughout the Heritage Landscape Inventory program, partnering in the past with the Essex National Heritage Commission, the Taunton River Wild &Scenic Study Committee and the Freedom’s Way Heritage Association. DCR’s partnership with the heritage corridors will bring the program to our region which has a rich history of residents working with natural resources to shape the world around them.
